August 24, 1960: Castro Says He's Friends with Reds, "Political Control of the New World," Senate Cuts Aid to Cuba Backers and A-sub Record

On this day in the Cold War, 1960, Fidel Castro said in Havana, "We are friends of the Soviet Union and of the Chinese People's Republic." ... Meanwhile, at the meeting of the Organization of American States in Costa Rica U.S. Secretary of State Christian Herter said the hemisphere faced an "urgent challenge: ... Sino-Soviet imperialism... The leaders of the Soviet Union and Communist China have made abundantly clear their determination to exploit the situation in Cuba as a means of intervening in inter-American Affairs. Their purpose is to ... prepare the way for political control of the New World." ... In Washington the Senate took action against Cuba by voting to end foreign aid to any nation that gave weapons or economic assistance to Cuba. ... A record was also set on this day in 1960: an atomic submarine completed a voyage under the ice of the upper Arctic to make the first underwater trip through the Northwest Passage.
