August 27, 1960: Congo's Lumumba "Reckless," Medical Bill Has "Nothing" for Most

An editorial in the New York Times on this day in 1960 was critical of the Congo's Patrice Lumumba, "the reckless but Soviet-backed Premier of the Congo." The editorial criticizes Lumumba for saying he will force UN troops to withdraw from his country once Belgian troops leave on August 29. The editorial says that "the departure of the UN would remove the last stabilizing influence that can check new violence, new atrocities and a civil war." ... Medical care for the "needy aged" passed the House and was set to be approved in the Senate, according to a news report on this day in 1960. "For the average person, the significant point to know about the medical bill is that there is nothing in it for the average person," a news story in the New York Times states. "This is state charity for the needy, aged 65 and over. Needy persons are a small percentage of the population."
