August 1, 1960: Time of Plenty?
"In a country with a standard of living as pleasantly adequate as ours most of us are no longer surprised when our friends or acquaintances let it be known that they have two cars, two television sets or two or three telephones in their homes. We may even agree that these double luxuries are necessary. If people in other countries a few years ago thought it a marvelous thing that so many Americans in modest circumstances should own a car, we ourselves have quickly become used to the idea of many of us owning not one but two cars. What was once the perogative of the few has become the property of the many."
