August 30, 1960: JFK Prepares for Transition, Bar Association Calls for Public Education on Communist Threat

Senator John F. Kennedy, behind in the polls, nonetheless prepared for his transition to the presidency with the appointment of four "Cold War" aides. Kennedy said the appointments were necessary in this "dangerous" time to allow him to move quickly during his first months in office. ... A public education campaign on Communism is needed in the country, the American Bar Association said on this day in the Cold War, 1960. The ABA adopted the recommendation of its Special Committee on Communist Tactics for local bar organizations to prepare speeches and pamphlets that explain "the nature, objectives and tactics of Communism."
